RPI has been selected as part of the Gulf Engineers & Consultants (GEC) team which will develop the third-party Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion for Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The sediment diversion is a key project under Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan, a long-term sustainable strategy to reduce land loss and sustain wetlands in the region. The project is also part of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration Plan aimed at compensating for impacts caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The sediment diversion is expected to restore significant habitat in the Barataria Basin, including fresh, intermediate, and brackish marshes by re-introducing Mississippi River sediment which historically built and maintained the area. The EIS will analyze and disclose the impacts of the project to the human and natural environment as required under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) as well as incorporate significant public engagement. RPI’s role will include scientific support in the areas of natural resources, coastal geomorphology, and water quality.
